One of the most imposing buildings in Valletta is the former “Sacra Infermeria” of the Order of St John of Jerusalem, now popularly known as the Mediterranean Conference Centre, which is located adjacent to Fort St Elmo and overlooking the Grand Harbour.
This building was formerly a hospital of the Knights of the Order of St John which was considered to be one of the best hospitals in Europe at the time. It is now being used as a Conference Centre, whilst set up with all modern day technologies, it has maintained its historical character and is increasingly popular with meetings, exhibitions, theatrical events, launches, banquets and receptions of various sizes.
The La Valette Hall is the main Banqueting Hall at the Centre. Formerly the Sacra Infermeria’s Great Magazine Ward, it is an architectural gem with a combination of splendid vaulted ceilings over its sheer length, making it one of the most elegant banqueting halls on the Island. Covering 1,500 square metres, it seats 900 guests. Alternatively, the hall can accommodate up to1,500 guests for a stand up occasion. For smaller groups the hall can be split by means of a red curtain or partitions
